FirstPush — Product marketing clarity for bootstrapped founders navigating the pre-scale phase.
Why I Started FirstPush, and Who It's For
Welcome to FirstPush. I'm Hisako, a B2B marketer and currently CMO at a bootstrapped SaaS company.
After spending almost two decades helping publicly listed companies and PE-backed firms grow across EMEA and APAC, I found myself in a genuinely different kind of challenge: leading marketing in a company with zero external funding, a small team, and a product-led growth model.
I knew from the start that the playbooks I'd built my career on wouldn't fit. But I had something more useful for this context: I came in as a user of the product. I was actually recruited after meeting the founders through a user interview, which meant I understood the problem the product was solving before I understood the marketing challenges around it. That inside-out perspective turned out to be exactly the right starting point for helping rebuild marketing in a PLG company.
(And yes, I said "rebuild", as I didn't come in as the first marketer. There were 3 junior marketers with content backgrounds, who built the first marketing efforts. I came in to help improve what was already in place.)
What followed was an education. I'm a marketer who built her career in sales-led environments, where the relationship between marketing and revenue is mediated by a sales team. I learned so much from great sales people I worked with. PLG removes that layer entirely. The product does the selling. Marketing has to work differently, and figuring out how has been one of the most interesting challenges of my career. It also reminded me of something I'd started to take for granted: that good marketing, done with focus and rigour, can genuinely move the needle even in resource-constrained conditions.
FirstPush is where I document some of the learning and answers. Not really as a finished playbook, but as a working body of thinking built from real experience inside a bootstrapped PLG company.
Who This Blog Is For
FirstPush is written for technical founders running bootstrapped (or very lightly funded) B2B SaaS companies at its early phase of growth. As I currently work in a PLG environment, I mostly base my learning associated with PLG companies, too.
More specifically, you're likely in one of two situations.
You're doing the marketing yourself, probably alongside everything else, and you want to understand what product marketing actually is, what it requires, and how to do the foundational work well before you hire someone to take it over.
Or you're at the point of making your first marketing hire, and you want to set that person up to succeed rather than hand them a roadmap and hope for the best.
In either case, the content here is designed to give you frameworks and practical tools grounded in the realities of a bootstrapped PLG context, not a well-funded startup with a full marketing department.
If you're looking for growth hacking tactics, viral launch strategies, or advice built for companies with significant marketing budgets, this isn't the right place. There are excellent resources for that stage. This blog is for the phase before it, really.
What You'll Find Here
While they are not organised clearly, I broadly write on below 4 themes.
Getting the Foundations Right
Company strategy, product strategy, and product marketing strategy. These are the documents your marketer will need to do their job well, and the thinking a founder needs to do before anyone can market the product effectively. Most companies skip this work and wonder why their messaging keeps shifting.
Hiring and Setting Up Your First Marketer
When to hire, what to look for, and how to prepare before your marketer's first day. This section is built around a simple premise: the quality of your preparation determines the quality of their work in the first 90 days.
Executing with Limited Resources
Most marketing advice assumes you have a team to delegate to, a budget to experiment with, and time to iterate. Bootstrapped marketing assumes none of those things. This section is about applying solid marketing fundamentals in a context where everything costs something, whether that's time, money, or focus. I write from a PLG context, but the principles here apply to any bootstrapped SaaS company trying to do more with less without cutting corners on the work that actually matters.
Life of a Bootstrapped Marketer
Real stories, hard calls, and honest reflections from inside a bootstrapped company. The wins, the mistakes, and the things I wish I'd known earlier.
Why a blog? Shouldn't you just write LinkedIn posts?
Who reads a blog these days… right? I know.
But I wanted to explain my thinking in a way that provides real informational value, not just formats optimised for impressions or engagement.
This blog is written for a small, specific audience. Most people who find it will probably do so through word of mouth rather than a viral post. That's intentional and I'm completely fine with it.
I also wanted a space where all my thinking could be catalogued and connected in a meaningful way. A newsletter didn't fit that either, at least not for now.
Thanks for being here. If something resonates, or if you're working through a similar challenge and want to compare notes, feel free to get in touch.
